Report into Consumer Protection in Building Industry

From the VBA:   The Victorian Auditor-General's Office (VAGO) has today issued a report into Victoria's consumer protection framework for building construction, which includes recommendations for the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).

The VBA welcomes the report and VAGO's acknowledgement of the actions undertaken by the VBA, since its establishment in July 2013, to address previous recommendations, along with the positive steps it has taken to improve its regulatory performance in a number of areas.

VBA - Confused where waterproofing is required?

On Friday the Victorian Building Authority published a media released titled "Confused where waterproofing is required?" to address the rising number of queries that they are receiving about the requirements for water-proofing and water-resistance. The full media release it quoted below.



Each week the VBA receives several enquiries about the waterproofing requirements for wet areas. Building elements in wet areas must be waterproof or water resistant in accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC) and must comply with Australian Standard AS3740 – Waterproofing of domestic wet areas. Bathrooms, showers, laundries and toilets are considered to be wet areas within a home, and as such, the building elements in these rooms must be waterproof or water resistant. The NCC 2015 (Volume One – Table F1.7, and Volume Two – Table 3.8.1.1) provides details of the areas that are required to be water resistant or waterproof. For bathrooms with timber floors (including timber sheet flooring such as particleboard or plywood sheet flooring), the entire floor outside the shower area must be waterproofed. Likewise, floor and wall junctions should be waterproofed whether the bathroom floor has timber or fibre-cement floors. If concrete or compressed fibre-cement sheet flooring is used in wet areas, the floor must at least be water resistant. VBA Urges Home Owners to Check Their Insurance

People living in bushfire prone areas are being urged by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to
check that their home insurance policy takes into account all rebuilding costs, including those
associated with meeting the national building code introduced after the 2009 Black Saturday

2015 Guide to Standards and Tolerances

The Victorian Building Authority has just released an updated version of its "Guide to Standards and Tolerances". The VBA explains the purpose of the Guide as, "a convenient reference to the minimum standards and quality of domestic building work that can be expected. It provides references to relevant areas of legislation and gives guidance on areas of building standards that are not covered by legislation or most building contracts."
