Camera Chosen... Now for a Lens!

I have decided, with the help of some serious enthusiasts, that the camera best suited for me is the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Now that the camera decision has been made, it's time to make the decision about the lens to purchase. My father-in-law has a large variety of Canon lenses so I don't need to buy more than one because I can borrow his every once in a while.

The two lenses that I am tossing up between are the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. The EF 24-105mm has a larger zoom whereas the EF 24-70mm has the widest aperture. If you have any advice please leave it in the comments section at the bottom of the page or send me an email using the contact form on the left of the page.

  1. very easy decision: EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM - wins every time, with its wide FS and FL - its the goto lens for me and many other photogs.

  2. but EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM in low light situation will be a good option as well. Can you have both :-)

    Hi,

I have the 24-105 (among many others) and it's an excellent lens. I haven't used the 24-70 F2.8, but people rave about how sharp it is. However, some also commented that the 24-105 has IS which give about 3 stops handheld, has extra reach and is lighter in weight which makes it far more usable. Check amazon.com reviews.
The lens that I use 95% of the time is surprisingly the 10-22mm. I even used it to take hundreds (probably low thousands) of photos of my house build so far. Incredible wide angle, and the 18 Mega pixels sensor enables me to zoom beautifully. I even got the kids to hold a tape measure for me and took detailed photos with width and height for every wall in the house before plastering for future reference. I can tell exactly where every nail, pipe, wire noggin or stud is beneath the Plasterboard now. All this using the Canon EF-S 10-22.

IS stands for Image stabilization. A mechanism in the Cannon lens that compensates for shaky hands. Taking a shot depends on lighting and when there is less light the shutter needs to be open for longer time to allow more light in which. Without a tripod, Image Stabilization helps in those situations and allows you to have a sharp rather than shaky photo.
